Henna is a natural plant dye derived from the ground leaves of the plant Lawsonia inermis. The crushed, powdered leaves are mixed with a mildly acidic liquid such as lemon juice and the resulting paste can be applied to the body, wood or untreated leather to leave a stain. On skin henna gives a temporary red-brown stain that grows out as dead skin cells are shed. On hair, leather and wood henna gives a permanent stain.
